Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is Freerice?
Freerice is an educational trivia game that helps you get smarter while making a difference for people around the world. Every question you answer correctly raises 10 grains of rice for the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.
How does Freerice raise money?
Private sponsors match the rice grain donations generated within Freerice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. This money goes into the pot of "greatest needs" to support the organization's ongoing emergencies. 100% of all funds generated via Freerice go to the World Food Programme. Freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises.
Can I play Freerice for community service hours?
Thousands of students use Freerice every day for virtual volunteering and community service hours. We are a very small team, so we are not able to individually verify players, but you can download this volunteer certificate and fill it out yourself to acknowledge your rice grains.
Are you really donating rice?
Rice is a metaphor used to make the game tangible for players. Although some rice is indeed purchased as part of WFP’s food assistance programs, the funds generated through the game support WFP’s programs overall, where needs are greatest, not specifically the purchasing of rice. Every right answer on the game generates the equivalent of ten grains of rice as payment towards the United Nations World Food Programme’s operations in over 80 countries around the world.
Where are the donations going to?
All funds generated via Freerice go to support the UN World Food Programme's lifesaving work around the world. The donations are used as flexible funding to respond to urgent emergencies in countries like Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Ukraine, but we cannot track exactly where they go on a daily basis.
Am I still making a difference if I'm not logged in?
Yes, you can play Freerice with or without an account. If you answer questions and are not logged in, your rice grains are still being counted through our website — you just won't be able to keep track of them over time. The best way to use Freerice is to create an account so you can track your rice grains.
There's a misspelling / wrong answer / problem with one of your questions.
Please send us an email and let us know what the problem is so we can fix it in the game.
Do you still have a Freerice app?
You may have noticed that we recently removed the Freerice app in the App Store & Google Play Store, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 98% of our players play Freerice on desktop, so we made a decision to focus our resources on the responsive web app. You can still play the game on desktop or your mobile phone by entering www.freerice.com in your browser! We appreciate your understanding and hope to bring the apps back in the future.
When was Freerice created?
Freerice was created in October 2007 by John Breen, a computer programmer, to help his son study for the SAT exam. In 2009 he donated the site to WFP in order to help feed and educate as many people as possible throughout the world.
I'm not seeing any ads.
We have removed all commercial ads in Freerice and have a new funding mechanism in the platform. Private sponsors now match the rice grains earned in the game. Every question you answer correctly earns 10 grains of rice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. The donations generated through Freerice help support WFP's work in emergencies around the world.
Can I contribute a category or more questions to Freerice?
We're always looking for volunteers to share their knowledge and help us add more questions to Freerice. Please send an email to wfp.freerice@wfp.org and let us know a little bit about you, your area of expertise and what questions you would like to contribute to the game.

Freerice at School
How can schools ensure Freerice works smoothly on their network?
To ensure Freerice functions without interruptions, schools should configure their network software to "trust" or "allow" all requests to the following domains:
- freerice.com
- *.freerice.com (all subdomains of freerice.com)
This setup ensures that all features and content on Freerice are accessible for students and staff. If you experience any issues, please check your network's firewall or content filtering settings to confirm these domains are permitted.
How can my students play Freerice in large groups without getting kicked off the server?
If you can share a list of IP addresses that are coming from your school and we can verify that they are indeed linked to this school, we can ask our developers to "whitelist" these addresses so that they do not trigger our anti-bot protections.
Is there a way to do a mass registration of students so we can use your site?
Please send us an email so we can help you with this.
How can I host a competition on Freerice?
The best way to host a competition is to create a group. Divide players into teams and create a "Freerice Group" for each one. As the administrator and group creator, you can monitor each team and keep track of how many rice grains are generated by each one. The leaderboard also provides stats on individual players.
How can a teacher track the progress of his or her students?
Each user can see how many grains of rice he or she has generated by looking under their "Profile". You can also create a Group for your class (https://play.freerice.com/groups) to collectively raise rice. You will be able to track individual progress on the Group Leaderboard and see the cumulative rice grains that are raised by all players within the group.
Due to state education requirements, we have to confirm how all vendors handle Student Personal Data.
We receive many requests from schools around data privacy issues, but we don't have a designated focal point to sign-off on legal agreements at the moment. We're looking into this matter and hope to clarify our privacy policies in 2025 so the game can be formally adopted by schools around the US.
